The Dawn Redwood
Metasequoia glyptostroboides
Grown in Western China for thousands of years this beautiful conifer was thought to be only known as fossil remains. Re-discovered and introduced to the Western World in 1945 it created quite a stir. In 1969 this handsome tree was given an Award of Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society.
One of only five deciduous conifer genera the Dawn Redwood has small light feathery foliage. Green in summer the autumn colours are spectacular when grown in a sunny sheltered garden. The brilliant tawny pink and old gold foliage gives way to reveal it's strong architectural form and with age the fluted trunk. A handsome upright specimen tree. Ours is 6m now after 30 years growth.
The Dawn Redwood likes a moderately fertile soil, moist but well drained. Full sun brings out the autumn colours best and shelter from wind allows the best shape.
Our tree in front of the shop is a picture when in autumn colour in April and May. Call and see the colours and the fluted trunk for yourself.
