Parthenocissus himalanyana

A new climber from the western hills of Dali in China. This hardy climber was collected in China by Gordon Bailey of the Gore gardens on one of his trips to that great storehouse of garden plants.

A vigorous hardy vine that climbs by tendrils not suckers. The new spring growth is a beautiful coppery green which as the summer progresses turns to a dark green. By autumn the leaves have turned through bronze to a rich red, making a spectacular show. The winter vine is a trellis of fine stems that lace together.

Parthenocissus himalayana likes a well drained fertile soil with some peat or compost. Planted in the sun the autumn colour is best. The vine looks good climbing over any structure or used as a ground cover where the spring new growth makes a good show. Planted on the top of a wall this vine will hang down like a red waterfall over a long period in autumn.
